For an installed base of 30 million smart meters in the US, the focus is no longer the management of electricity and consumption, but an array of technologies such as communication networks, WI-FI and transmission controls. It is increasingly important to integrate smart grid management with localized energy production using solar, wind and other means, as well as with a variety of uses such as individual health monitoring and control of water, transportation and energy infrastructures in urban areas.
